Declinazioni Contemporanee
During Artissima 2025, MAO – Museum of Oriental Art, Turin presents the third edition of Declinazioni Contemporanee, a programme of site-specific commissions that invites contemporary artists to engage with the museum’s evolving collection. Among the featured works is Description Generale (A Historical Map of the Other) by Francesco Simeti, now part of MAO’s permanent collection. The installation guides visitors through a cultural journey that reinterprets the history of the Silk Roads while critically examining Western orientalism.
The luminous objects, created in collaboration with WonderGlass, take shape as pagodas through a variety of techniques, ranging from the Murano tradition of blown glass, which lends them lightness, to more contemporary casting methods that enhance their material presence. Together, they evoke the image of a suspended landscape that accompanies and amplifies the scenographic dimension of the wallpaper and textiles.
