LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL 2024
Boundless
London Design Festival returns this September 14-22, transforming the British capital into a design destination for the twenty-second year in row.
Across nine days, more than 300 events – including exhibitions and installations, workshops and tours – will bring the design-conscious to many of London’s burroughs, uniting global talents and local makers. According to Festival curators, “the global creative industries will gather in London to showcase work that engages in a myriad of topics including our relationship with technology, the growth of AI, materials and bio-materials, eco-conscious design, sustainability and community-driven design, as well as prototypes, experimental work and future-facing initiatives.”
Returning to London for LDF, WonderGlass is proud to present recent collaborations with Bethan Laura Wood, nendo and Industrial Facility, all highlights of Mint Gallery’s BOUNDLESS.
The interlinking Chain Table in cast glass by Bethan Laura Wood showcases the material expertise of WonderGlass’s casting studios, where a unique glass recipe achieves exceptionally watery robust forms. This first editioned work in honey ambered tone draws inspiration from architectural vernaculars throughout Asia, translated anew in Venice.
Exhibited for the first time in the United Kingdom, nendo’s Dusk table lamp collection was unveiled earlier this year for Milan Design Week, and represents the first fused glass collaboration between nendo and WonderGlass’s studios. Following earlier forays in blown and cast glass, Dusk finds an elegant and meditative expression. Coupling a blown glass orb suspended within a fused glass carapace, the deceptively simple form for each Dusk lamp magically hides its complexly expert engineering.
An exercise in simplicity via reduction, Plateau by Industrial Facility takes one round mouth blown bubble before introducing it into a second L-shaped mould. Achieving a squared corner along one aspect of the vase, this technique of counterbalancing rare equilibriums permits the vase to fit, unusually, into exacting corners.
Featured alongside other boundary-breaking works by Trent Jansen in collaboration with artisans Tanya Singer, Errol Evans, and Johnny Nargoodah, in addition to bespoke installations by another WonderGlass frequent collaborator, Studio Waldemeyer, Mint Gallery’s BOUNDLESS also introduces a curated selection of standout graduate designers and emerging talents: Teun Zwets, Ilaria Cavaglia and Masao (Zhengxiong) Rong.
In the words of BOUNDLESS’s curators, Mint Gallery invites you to “discover these innovators who challenge design norms and explore new creative horizons with experimental materials in the boundless realm of contemporary design. Let their visionary works inspire and redefine your perception of what design can achieve.”
