GENESIS

Created for the Sage Hill residence in collaboration with Rowland+Broughton, Genesis is a bespoke sculptural installation over six feet in diameter and more than 600 pounds. The project reflects a natural synergy between Rowland+Broughton’s practice of convergent design and WonderGlass’s own approach to glass as an architectural material, together creating an integration of architecture, interior, and craftsmanship into a single structure. At Sage Hill, Genesis mirrors both the personal story of the home and the scale of the surrounding landscape, through a fusion of glass, steel, and light.

The frame is satin-finished stainless steel, laser-cut and hand-worked, including the satin finishing. The steel dome is hand-polished to a mirror finish for maximum light refraction. The central disc is green float glass, textured and curved in an electric kiln over a steel dome mold. The surrounding wedges are Murano glass, cut from sheet in three shades of green, fused together in an electric kiln, then hand-polished: a process that draws on WonderGlass’s mastery of Murano glassmaking, from cutting and fusing to hand-finishing each piece. The steel frame is lit from within by a flexible embedded LED strip, generating plays of light and reflection across the dome.
